Sacred Mountains and Cities: HuanucoPampa - Cordillera Huayhuaysh Trek

SACRED MOUNTAINS and CITIES
HUANUCOPAMPA / CORDILLERA HUAYHUASH TREK
(9 Days / 8 Nights)

We drive across the Cordillera Blanca Puna plateaus and narrow valleys up to the remains of the Inca city of Huanucopampa, the Capital of Chinchaysuyo, one of the four states of the Inca Empire.  Here, in a high Andean plateau overlooking the extensive lowland valleys, we visit the remains of a very well planned urban city with food storage facilities and a sophisticated system of water canals and reservoirs.  We explore the military quarters, plazas, gates and streets. On the horizon we might see a portion of the great Royal Highway that linked the extensive Inca Empire.  The Inca’s Palace, its purification fountain, the house of the chosen women and other urban remains of this great civilization bring us back thousands of years into the insights of a glorious past in the heart of the Andes.

We drive up to the beginning of our trail into the magnificent Cordillera Huayhuash, one of the most isolated mountain ranges of the world, with overwhelming views of glistening vertical walls of ice, rock and snow challenging your wildest imagination. This land of geographical contrast and extreme conditions is also the land where native civilizations co-exist with the elements as they did millenias ago. These friendly local people provide the human perspective and the inter-relations with their once sacred Apus (mountain God).

We will experience that spiritual power while observing these iced giants taking your breath away. The colorful waters of the beautiful lakes found in this circuit reflects the bizarre Yerupajá (6634m), Jerupajá Chico (6121m), Jirishanca (6094m), Rondoy (5879m), Sarapo (6127m), Siulá Grande (6344m), and Siulá Chico (6265m), among other amazing snow covered peaks.
